Relevance/rationale of the indicator (resp. why the indicator was chosen to measure the target and how it is suitable for these purposes) |
The indicator provides a measure of the relative extent of forest in a country, it is therefore a basic indicator of the relative area of forests. |
Target value of the indicator and its evaluation |
Increase is considered as a positive development. |

Comment |
With regard to worldwide use, the FAO compares the forest area with the total land area, ie. after deducting water areas. Therefore, the indicator is slightly higher than the national forestry data used, which is the ratio of the forest area to the total territory of the state (including water areas).
The forest area is taken over from the State Administration of Land Surveying and Cadastre. The national forest inventory, which examines the actual occurrence of stands meeting the definition of a forest, states a figure significantly higher than the State Administration of Land Surveying and Cadastre.
The forest area is constantly increasing slightly. Partly it is the growth in the newly forested land, and partly by the refinement of Cadastre data.
