Agenda 2030 - List Of Indicators
Forest Area As A Proportion Of Total Land Area
Indicator detail
Metadata
Relevance/rationale of the indicator (resp. why the indicator was chosen to measure the target and how it is suitable for these purposes) | The indicator provides a measure of the relative extent of forest in a country, it is therefore a basic indicator of the relative area of forests. |
Target value of the indicator and its evaluation | Increase is considered as a positive development. |
Definition | Forest area as a proportion of total land area in each year. The share of the forest area to the total land area (country area after deduction of water areas) in each (reference) year. Forest area is based on National Forest Inventory (NFI) data. Total land area is based on data from the State Administration of Land Surveying and Cadastre. |
Measuring unit | % |
Indicator disaggregation | |
Reference period (resp. the period to which the indicator relates) | Forest area and total land area as at the 31 December of the reference year. |
Related geographical area | CZ (NUTS 0) |
Comment | With regard to worldwide use, the FAO compares the forest area with the total land area, ie. after deducting water areas. Therefore, the indicator is slightly higher than the national forestry data used, which is the ratio of the forest area to the total territory of the state (including water areas). The forest area is based on the field survey data of the National Forest Inventory (NFI), which monitors the presence and character of tree stands including the actual land use in accordance with the FAO FRA definition of forest. The forest area is constantly and slightly increasing. The increase in forest area is partly due to afforestation, but mostly due to natural forest expansion. |
Update periodicity | Annually |
