Relevance/rationale of the indicator (resp. why the indicator was chosen to measure the target and how it is suitable for these purposes) |
Wastewater data are crucial to promote strategies for sustainable and safe wastewater use or reuse to the benefit of the world’s population health and the global environment, but also to respond to growing water demands, increasing water pollution loads, and climate change impacts on water resources. |
Target value of the indicator and its evaluation |
Is not mentioned – in general, the higher the proportion of safely treated wastewater, the better. |
Definition |
This indicator measures the volumes of wastewater which are generated through different activities, and the volumes of wastewater which are safely treated before discharge into the environment.
The ratio of the volume treated to the volume generated is taken as the "proportion of wastewater flow safely treated".
Wastewater flows will be classified into industrial, services, and domestic flows, with reference to the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities Revision 4 (ISIC). To the extent possible, the proportion of each of these waste streams that is safely treated before discharge to the environment will be calculated. |

Comment |
Data for indicator 6.3.1 are not available according to the relevant UN methodology. Since the concept of this indicator has completely changed compared to the previous metadata, a proxy indicator was proposed, which can be used as a certain substitute when reporting indicator 6.3.1. The given time series refers only to the treatment of wastewater from public sewers, not all wastewater, therefore this indicator is currently only a proxy indicator. According to the information in the metadata, this indicator is problematic for many countries, not only with the identification of individual wastewater streams, but also with the determination of "safe treatment". The fact that wastewater is treated does not mean that it is treated safely.
In practice, this indicator is calculated by the agency itself based on the annual questionnaire from the field of water management OECD/Eurostat Joint Questionnaire section on Inland Waters (JQ-IW).
