Agenda 2030 - List Of Indicators
Youth/adult Literacy Rate
Indicator detail
Metadata
| Relevance/rationale of the indicator (resp. why the indicator was chosen to measure the target and how it is suitable for these purposes) | Reading and mathematical literacy are among the key competencies of adults, which are important for personal development and employment in society. The adult population with a low level of basic skills is exposed to a higher risk of unemployment, a higher incidence of poverty and social exclusion, and higher health risks. The indicator can detect a problem in this area and thus help set an education policy if needed. |
| Target value of the indicator and its evaluation | By 2030, ensure that all youth and a substantial proportion of adults, both men and women, achieve literacy and numeracy. |
| Definition | Percentage of the number of literate persons out of the total number of persons in the same age group, excluding persons with unknown literacy status. |
| Measuring unit | % |
| Indicator disaggregation | By sex |
| Reference period (resp. the period to which the indicator relates) | The PIAAC is coordinated by the OECD – so the deadlines are set within the OECD, the Czech Republic has no influence on this. |
| Related geographical area | CZ (NUTS 0) |
| Comment | For the Czech Republic, the source of data is the PIAAC survey. The data provided are: Proportion of people aged 16–65 who achieved level 2 and above in the PIAAC reading literacy test. Proportion of people aged 16–65 who achieved level 2 and above in the PIAAC mathematical literacy test. Data are available for a different age range than required by the UN methodology (15–24 years and 15+). Data are always available for individual literacy levels separately, it is not possible to create a single indicator. The PIAAC survey is held once every ten years. The indicator underwent a significant revision in 2025 and the calculation methodology changed, the Czech Republic will continue to use the PIAAC survey. |
