Agenda 2030 - List Of Indicators
Proportion Of Medium And High-tech Industry Value Added In Total Value Added
Indicator detail
Metadata
Relevance/rationale of the indicator (resp. why the indicator was chosen to measure the target and how it is suitable for these purposes) | Industrial development generally entails structural transition from resource-based and low technology activities to MHT activities. Modern, highly complex production structures offer better opportunities for skills development and technological innovation. MHT activities are considered high-value addition industries with higher technological intensity and labour productivity. By tracking this indicator, the level of domestic technology, as well as that of research and innovation can be observed. An increasing share of MHT reflects domestic technological advancedment through higher impacts of innovation. |
Target value of the indicator and its evaluation
Definition | Percentage of medium-high and high technology (MHT) industries to the total value added of all manufacturing industries (MVA). |
Measuring unit | % |
Indicator disaggregation
Reference period (resp. the period to which the indicator relates) | Percentage of MHT to the total value added of all manufacturing industries (MVA) by the end of the calendar year |
Related geographical area | CZ (NUTS 0) |
Comment | Since 2008, the proportion of medium and high-tech industry (MHT hereafter) value added in total value added of manufacturing (MVA hereafter) increased from 42.51% to the level of approximately 50 %. The highest value of the indicator was achieved in 2017 (50,58 %), the most important year-on-year increase occurred in 2010, when the share of MHT grew by 3.5%. The major contribution to this development was due by following divisions: - Manufacture of basic chemicals, fertilisers and nitrogen compounds, plastics and synthetic rubber in primary forms, - Manufacture of electric motors, generators, transformers and electricity distribution and control apparatus, - Manufacture of motor vehicles and - Manufacture of parts and accessories for motor vehicles. The latter two divisions also account for the largest proportion of the value added of MHT. After the highest level achieved in 2017, indicator value slightly decreased in 2018 and 2019, due to motor vehicle industry slowing-down, that, despite it, represented the largest share of the MHT value added. Year 2021 is generally (not only for manufacturing) the period of significant slow-down as a consequence of covid-19 pandemic and preventive measures taken, including full or partial break in operation of industries. High and medium-high-tech industries were particularly touched. It results in their smaller contribution to the value added. |
